Carnegie Science Center’s Programs
BRAND IDENTITY, PUBLICATION DESIGN, & EVENT MARKETING
The Science Center encourages problem-solving, play, and true enthusiasm for the ever-inspiring world around us!
The mission of the Carnegie Science Center (CSC) is to delight and educate through interactive experiences in science and technology.
My vision board brought together imagery with heightened dimension, texture, and energy — wide stretches of space spotted with moons and stardust, bolts of lightning, nature’s mysteries, and more.
When I stepped into my new role as graphic design manager at the Science Center, I became very aware of what was missing. Outside of a logo and a principal PMS red, there was so system to announce and motivate the mission mentioned above.
In honor of science (meets art), I began to explore and truly experiment! My actions moving forward tackled stretching the personality of the once cookie-cutter “science museum” identity.
DIY painted swatches for the “fill” of field trip publication imagery
I formed a genuine new ingredient list to play-out in a series of field-trip acquisition materials featuring a mixed-media medley of buoyant graphics and friendly, colorful headlines.
FUN-ky symbols representing key themes of the Science Center — from weather, to river science, to outer space!
My experiments continue…
When drafting a composition, I reflect on the photographs I’ve taken at CSC events (samples surrounding), and ever present is a golden curiosity or true wonder inspired by space, nature, motion, and overall science!
The movement and illuminated use of line, type, color, and pattern work below owns that quality of “wonder.”
Informal Learning: The leading creative need of 2020 was digital banners and ads for the many individual offerings within the Science Center’s constellation of programming.

Summer Camps: Our camp experience looked different in 2020, but sported a cosmic-inspired camper t-shirt and color-coded signage to welcome/guide parents and campers.
Camper name badges
The middle panel of the camp signs had a dry erase laminate applied to it to allow for a weekly change-out of dates and camp themes.
HOLIDAY WONDER! The following festive digital and print artwork positioned the Science Center (pre-COVID PA shutdown) to excite and welcome back guests who make it an annual tradition to visit and explore!
The holiday edition of the Science Center’s quarterly mailing featured a Planetarium fixture — Quasi the Robot!

The Science Center is ever in motion and discovery, thus when the messaging of our spring 2020 billboards proved mute, we replaced them with a well wishes greeting!
(Got to love a science pun).
Special Patchwork Project!
Scout troops and families are fans of the Science Center’s sleepover events or “Explore and Snore.” The museum is open in the evening for extra exploration and specialty science activities. Every attendee receives an embroidered patch to commemorate the night stay. The annual patch design lightly references the themes of the sleepover season and includes a smart infusion of a graphic within the type.
2018 — Themes included space travel and Lego® building!
2019 — A new and popular theme introduced — Gaming (with homage to retro video games)!
2020 — Feature films playing at this year’s events included Jumanji and Night at the Museum.
